6:45PM - This time a year ago today I was sitting in a room designated to us in the hospital. It was our holding cell while we waited for our newly born daughter to be brought in to us "when she warms up". Little did we know that within hours she would be whisked off to a children's hospital that could offer more clarity on our situation. This began our year of becoming well known in Dr.'s Offices, Cardiologist Office's, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the PICU (Pediatric).
Fabienne was born with Trisomy 21, known also as Down Syndrome. What began as a rocky start has turned to be out to be the biggest blessing of my life! She's my little pal and is a total gift from God. Today, she's 1 and I celebrate her. Happy Birthday Love.

October 2, 2010. That's the day Kathleen and Russell became "The Manalastas"! October 21, 2010. That's the day I became "Dad". August 19, 2011. That's the day I share with you what a special day they had! Life got more than crazy when Fabienne was born causing this post to slip under the feeding tubes and trips to the cardiologist. I recently saw Kathleen and Russell and thought "HEY! I never posted their wedding!"
It was mostly an overcast day, as most fall days seem to be. Kathleen, Russell, and Crew added plenty of life to an otherwise gloomy day. Tons. Of. Fun. I love seeing how much these guys love life and the way they can spark laughter with a look. They smile a lot, and it's contagious. Throughout the day they were sneaking to practice their "secret" dance which was a treat! After the reception I wanted to hire their DJ to play the music of my life. Follow me around daily and play only the best 80's, 90's, and 00's to my daily activities. It was a privilege to part of this day. Thanks Kat and Russ!

Oh Briana (& Pat)! After 2 attempts at pulling off an engagement shoot due to business and work schedules, it finally came down to saying..."Want to try a sunrise shoot?" Of course, I didn't think about what I was saying and that I would actually have to wake at this ridiculous time. After agreeing, they met at my house at 5:15AM. AM if you didn't catch that. 5:15. I'm tired thinking about it. It took only minutes before Briana & Pat, and were climbing hills, trudging through ditches, and turning their outfits into a Hot Mess! Great sunrise and Great couple! You guys were a blast and I can't wait for your Big Day!

If you don't already know, I LOVE the Adirondacks. I'm looking for reasons/excuses to move there on a weekly basis. In the meantime, we take as many trips as we can. This time was special because it was the tiny one's first camping trip. We usually tent camp but this time Marla booked us a cozy little guide tent (queen bed included), on the premises of The Woods Inn which is nestled in on Fourth Lake, as a treat for fathers day! Happy Fathers Day toooooo Me! As we meandered around during our stay...

Every now and again, I find myself saying..."Oh Life". Sometimes it hits me how interesting, crazy, ridiculous, and amazing life can be. There are so many scenarios it offers. I find it interesting that I can get so wrapped up in what I think it should be and forget about those the blessings and growth that come with the unforeseen. When Fabienne came along we began one of those growth spurts. From birth to feeding tubes to Trisomy 21 to heart surgery, Marla has proved to be more of an incredible woman than I'd ever imagined. She's just the most beautiful person I know. An incredible life mate, who just happens to be gorgeous and always game for anything. It's always a treat to be able to see her through the eyes of the camera and freeze life for a moment. Marla, you inspire me to be a better person and I'm truly thankful to be doing life with you. I Love & Appreciate You Friend. P.S. ~ Faba loves you too!

This was a long time coming! These guys have had he pleasure of doing life together for a while now! I always wondered when Brennan would pull the trigger, and I wondered no more when he invited my little family along for a pop the question trip. It was a treat to be there with the two of them. One super nervous. The other super excited (she knew, that bum!). Here we are in a foot of snow at a winter wonderland, in the midst of thousands and thousands of Christmas lights and snowmen when he knelt down and made her the happiest woman alive. What a special moment! Fast forward 6 months... Same crew and a similar situation where we find ourselves knee high in wild vetch with the couch from HEAVEN (thanks Cait)! Minutes before this fine piece of furniture was nestled in the loving room, now, nestled in the midst of a purple fairytale! See our friend Tara had business to take care of (a 40 something day trip to Ireland & Paris) so I figured it was now or never. Other than Brennan and I constantly snotting ourselves due to our allergy attacks, it was one stellar evening. Thanks for letting me be a part of all your hitching occasions! Can't wait til the wedding! Happy Friday to you all.

It was 9:04PM on Friday night, May 6th. I was at a friends house celebrating his birthday. At the party I get a call from an unknown number, so I let it go to voicemail. They left a message. It was Ira. In a panicked voice he proceeded to tell me that something terrible has happened. Their photographer, who was on the way down from Canada, was not allowed across the border. It's hours before the wedding and their photographer was stuck in another country. My heart dropped for them. Ira and Adrienne had already attempted to book me for the wedding but scheduling conflicts didn't allow for it and unfortunately I had to say I wasn't available. But now...I was shooting a wedding tomorrow! I was so glad to be able to relieve them and felt certain that it would be a great day! It's always such a privilege to work with people who appreciate you for what you do and appreciate photography itself. It was an amazing day filled with old cars, paddle boats, campfires, and an awesome couple. So glad I was able to be a part of it!

It's Monday evening. Nurses shuffle around tending to beeps and changing bags. In the down time, chatting about their home life and favorite foods. We're 4 days in from what was one of my darkest days. Thursday morning came and went. We showed up at 7:30am to meet with the surgeon and anesthesiologists just before handing her over. The morning went pretty well, all things considered. We waited and waited. Then within moments a the Dr. came in and the nurse and swept her away in a nice warm blanket which made her GOO as we said goodbye. There were tense moments that day. Waiting for confirmation that everything was going well at the halfway mark and the call into the hall by the surgeon, just to name a few. She looked amazing. As beautiful as ever. I immediately began rubbing her little fuzzy little head. We were through. Then the waiting began. Now at day 4, we have been through many sections of the roller coaster. I had psyched myself for an event to happen but didn't know when it would come. It came yesterday. Sitting in this chair, every siren began to wail. The nurse began calling in backups and people came running. I was helpless and watching this happen like a fly on the wall. After moments, which seemed like days, she was back to normal. As of today we are on the upswing. There are talks of extubating tomorrow and we've made progress today with weaning. After coming off of a paralytic and 2 types of sedation she is now able to connect with us. It's great to see her eyes again and see those little chubby legs kicking. Unfortunately with the progress comes more of the hard things. Like looking at us and crying with the noise being blocked by the breathing tube and the inability to just scoop her up and let her know that she's just fine. We're moving forward though. We can see the end in sight, hoping to possibly be released Thursday or Friday. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. Now take a look at one tough cookie...

Clayton suggested I share my view of the day so...We arrived in Nipomo just after lunch no Sunday. The warm air, the mountains, smell of oranges, and sight of endless citrus groves welcomed us as we wind down a dirt driveway asking, "Is this it! If it is this is Amazing". We immediately began to see the "Goodness" as Clayton likes to say. Vintage this. Rustic that. The most amazing details i'd ever seen. Needless to say we were both a bit giddy. As we made our way into the Dana Powers Barn we were blown away by the amount of handy work done by this family! Paintings and intricate table toppers. Amazing! We went through the afternoon sipping on bottled cokes and grape Faygo's, sometimes from mason jars. The day was so laid back, I felt like an invited guest. This was one incredible couple and their families equally as great! I mentioned to Clayton on one of our breaks as we relaxed in the shade and stared out over the rolling hills, "Dude, if only for the next 5 minutes, there is no better job". It was great to work along side Clayton and experience that day, there. Looking forward to the next!

GREAT OUTDOORS ~ MAN TRIP '11 spring edition

Man Trip. Where we head off to some foreign land (THE ADIRONDACKS), go and beat our chests, eat meat (A LOT), wrestle wild animals (DON'T THINK WE SAW ANY), build fires (THESE WERE NICE), and plan to do things that kick our butt (THIS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE)! This trip took us back up to our collective favorite spot. The Hi-Peak Region of The ADKS. Being hesitant about the weather and conditions we made plans to start at Colvin(4057'), summit it, then over to the summit of Blake(3960'), then back over Colvin(4057') and possibly Nippletop and Dial. Well we had another GORGEOUS day. HI 30's Low 40's, and barely a cloud in the sky! The trails were packed nicely as long as you statyed on them. 8 inches to the left or right and your trekking pole or leg would disappear into 3-4ft of snow. The nice weather did play a part in our demise as the snow on the backside of Colvin tuned to a snow cone consistency and not snowshoe or crampon could grip. Needless to say we did a portion of this on our bummers. It was a phenomenal weekend as it always is with these gentlemen and scholars. Can hardly wait for the next one!

LIFE ~ WHAT'S THIS?

This is a WELCOME sign, that's what it is! I Love winter but when spring rolls around I am one happy camper. I like to do things like drive around with the sunroof open and windows down the day it hits 45°, pretty much declaring that winter is over. So time to prime the mower and put away the snowshoes. Meet the Irvin's! OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH TAHOE! At least once a day I think about how amazing Tahoe was and try to figure out which crime to commit to purchase a holiday home there. Thanks a lot Kelsey! This trip was just fantastic. It was the last trip for Marla and I before our young lady came along and we treated it that way! (My brute of a wife hiked Maggie Peak like there was no tomorrow!) We had such a great time exploring the area and truly enjoyed our time with Kelsey and Michael. What a great and intriguing couple! Kelsey is an artist in sunny California and her husband is an art dealer! Needless to say they have super taste! The wedding took place at a lakeside home. Their attention to detail...WOW! We spent a few days shooting with them so this post will be slightly different in that I am only exposing their big day...FOR NOW! (Wait til you see our time at Emerald Bay) (BTW, K & M made their own invitations, vow books, and guestbook. Check them out.)

Today is a rough day for Marla & I. It's the beginning of a process that we're not very excited about. She recently posted about this and I couldn't say it better so I've included her post. Thanks for your prayer friends.

"some days my biggest worry is if she will sleep long enough for me to make breakfast and wash the diapers. but other days i worry about what heart surgery will be like. if i'll be by her side when she wakes up. what the scar will be like. if we'll be able to stay in the room with her 24 hours a day. most days i can't let my mind go there. monday we have our monthly appointment with the cardiologist. this appointment will be a little different. she will have an echocardiogram. this will be the first time they have looked at her heart since she was in the NICU. we have been praying for a miracle. that her little heart would be healed and she wouldn't need surgery. we would so appreciate it if you could keep us in your prayers these next few days. pray for a miracle. pray for comfort. pray for wisdom. our sweet faba will have to be sedated for the echo and we're not looking forward to that. they want us to keep her awake and with an empty stomach before the appointment. seriously? ...this is a four month old we're dealing with. should be an interesting morning. no matter what happens we know that God is faithful and has us in His hands. we have experienced His love through friends & family in so many ways these past few months. thank you friends!

Meet the Osborns! Ozzy and Sharon have nothing on these guys! I've had the pleasure of being friends with Alison for some time now and could almost consider her and her siblings my sisters. I was honored to be asked to shoot the second Noble wedding. (I've been TOLD I'm shooting the third as well) The wedding was held in Aurora, NY at The Aurora Inn. Holy Cow. This place was sweet! The kind of place you (I) walk around and stick complimentary things in my pockets! Needless to say I left with a years worth of soap, mouthwash, peppermints, linens, cutlery,... Ok I'm kidding. I may have swiped a fresh copy of one of my favorite magazines (EDIBLE). This was the Finger Lakes Edition. I Love It! HEY, they were there for the taking so cut me some slack! The weather was cooperative and the rain held off which gave us lots of great even light. I really enjoyed the day and being a part of this occasion.

Today, I can FINALLY say that my new portfolio site, justinmichau.com, is ready to launch! This has been a brainchild of mine for quite some time and I am excited to share it. The site will incapsulate trips from around the world, people I've had the pleasure of meeting, meals I've eaten, and of course show some of the awe inspiring views of nature that I so love. It is more of a journalistic/editorial view of my work. I'm gearing up for shoots this year which will be added to this ever evolving work. GREAT OUTDOORS ~ COLOR

As we speak it is a blistery -5 in the out-of-doors. It IS one of my favorite times of year as i truly enjoy the snow and crunch of the ice and all the things that winter brings. Hot drinks. Snowshoeing. Fires. Juniper Ridge Sweetgrass Incense. Getting stuck in the driveway. Things like that.

I've been slightly overwhelmed by life as of late. I've been reliving life and some of the past trips scrolling through my library. I have the itch for another trip so while preparation for that is underway I like to dip in to the old albums and revisit some of the amazing places I've been fortunate enough to go. Every time I roll through the pictures from out Anniversary trip from two years ago there's one image that always seems to hit me.

Vermont is by far one of my favorite places. For years Marla & I would go play life there. Roll into these small quaint little towns and eat at no name places. Trying to frequent the places the locals call their favorites we always find ourselves in remote little corners of nowhere. Those are the places we love. Another one of our favorite Vermont past times is to ride. Enjoying the mountains, streams, amazing colors (in Fall), and in search of ye good ole moose. We have a slight obsession with them. But, prefer remote wilderness. Which again is right up our alley. On that trip we found ourselves in the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge which had to have been pretty close to Russia (my good buddy Palin). I love traveling these single lane dirt roads with brush scraping the sides of the car, knowing this is WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. On that remote road, in that remote area, with the wild things, I shot this image. I was standing on a bridge (looking for trout) and 5 steps to the right this is what I saw. Looking down onto a fir tree, some brush whose color that had hit its peak, and a strange shade of purple brought out by the river rocks. I really loved what I saw. I must've snapped 10 different variations of this same image. While it may not be the most striking, every time I pass it in my roll through my library I try to tag it. Only to realize it's already marked to be posted or in a place where I can see it more often. So today, on this super cold snowy day and a day where I needed a little color in my life, this scene did it's job and reminded me of God's goodness, creativity, and my love for the GREAT OUTDOORS.

Life ~ A Vintage Weigh-In

Christmas time is here, / happiness and cheer, / fun for all that children / call their favorite time of year.... Yup from my favorite Christmas cartoon and I wouldn't hesitate to say its my favorite time of year. I sadly cheated this year and watched it on DVD as i knew with my schedule, I'd surely miss it. The holidays were great. I've been working on shooting with the new tiny person in my house and she doesn't hesitate to work it! So soon enough I will have more photos than you'd ever want to see of the wee one, but for now, a sweet girl and a tool we're seeing a lot of. Since little Fabienne was born we've had quite the struggle with feedings and weight gain. This shoot represented a milestone for us. Just this week she had significant weight gain and is eating like a "small bear", which is her nickname when she gets a bit grumpy. My vintage queen niece has all sorts of things relic. This scale happen to be one from her collection. Thanks Cait!

Life ~ In Da Studio

So, the category of "LIFE" should hold post's that let you in on what I'm up to. Well, some of you may know I play in a band. Brothers McClurg, as we are now formally known are at a exciting point in our career. We recently signed with Integrity Records and are now in the studio recording a new album. For the frosting on the cake, we are recording at the Goo Goo Dolls Studio in Buffalo. It's like the Disney land of soundboards, amps, fine woods, boutiqueness, holy goodness! Needless to say, I can hardly stand it! I feel extremely blessed to be able to play with the guys in this band, on this label, in this studio! I'm slightly behind on posting but my goal is to show some shots from each day. I will keep you posted on our progress. Just over a week til Christmas!!

I just can't wait to post this any longer! I recently had the pleasure of flying out to sunny California (seriously no rain in 10 days!?) to vacate with my honey and most of all to shoot the wedding of some of my dear friends Kelsey and Michael. Kelsey is a super artist and well...I'll save the rest of that for their wedding post. One of my favorite emails from her went a little like this..."I'm dying to do this & I feel like you'd be perfect to capture it: I want to find a beautiful cliff or something and jump off into the lake in my wedding dress (my leap of faith). I'm totally willing to ruin my dress after the wedding day if it means getting some amazing shots in nature." Let's just say I couldn't make this happen fast enough! It was quite the adventure trying to find the perfect spot but really...we were at LAKE TAHOE! Needless to say, Kelsey did an amazing job and we had a blast. Only a few bumps, scrapes and partially wet outfits. I've posted a few of my favorites from that session and will post more with the wedding.

This was a great summer and the Poag wedding was one of the highlights! The day could not have been anymore beautiful. Most of the wedding day happenings took place at the brides home and was top notch! The family made all of the food for the reception which created quite a buzz and amazing fragrance floating around the house. You could really experience the love these two shared by just being around them throughout the day. It was obvious they both had built up such and anticipation for the occasion. Joanna was working it! They were also my very first "first look" couple and set the bar VERY high with their special moment. It was great to be there and experience their excitement and their awesome day. Thanks for sharing your day guys!

Today was the first day I was able to get back outside and took advantage of it by heading to one of my favorite places...The Genesee County Park. I maintained a great routine of getting out for a hike up until our recent arrival. After a few weeks of being derailed, we grabbed our little package, bundled her up, and headed out to show her what will soon be one of HER favorite places. *Deep Breath*... Autumn has just about reached it's fullness here in Western New York. I felt inspired this morning to head out and enjoy it all. I had been driving the backroads of the WNY for quite some time and finally found my way back to Attica. After a few stops I thought it might be a good day to revisit the Attica Cascades. I was correct. It was gorgeous and after our recent downpours we had a good amount of water spilling over. After a few minutes of enjoying the falls, smells, and cool temperatures, I was interrupted by a phone call. I was being summoned by 2(She alway's blames the babe) for a Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Spice Muffin Delivery! Hey I can't argue with a stellar request(demand) like that! Muffins for all!

Ten is how many years I've been graced with calling Marla Christine my wife. Pretty soon I'll be calling her "My Baby Momma" and endearing things like that! I'm sure "My Baby Daddy's" will be flying around the house too. Not many people get to marry their best friends and I consider myself one of the lucky ones. She truly makes marriage a blast and I'd never want to face a day without her! From hiking Southern Alps of New Zealand to the walking the mowed paths of the County Park...she's always up for anything! (Except eating meat of course!) Great Outdoors ~ Ode to Yosemite

Well, this is way out of order but I was just blown away by the GRANDNESS of Yosemite. I continually said to Marla..."Babe, Stop... Look around at where we are!" I've had the opportunity to admire Ansel Adams work over the years as well as some reading about him and WOW, did he capture this place to a T. It was great to tread the same ground as guys like Adams and John Muir. While hiking in the Mariposa Grove, which house's the most humongous Sequoia's I've ever seen, we came across this older gentleman who was quite a spectacle. He had setup and old large-format camera on his tripod and would Tweak this and Turn that. Plug this. Click that. All the while appearing and disappearing from underneath his hood to grab something from Sharon, his wife/assistant. (They make the best assistant's!) He had secret tools on his belt in leather compartments. I knew we would be friends by his sheer amount of sweet gadgets he had. As I stood there I began to feel ridiculous. I see Sharon hand her husband ONE, UNO, 1., Un...a single slide of film. I began to say to myself..."What have we done". As I stand there with my camera in hand, knowing I had another 458 images left on my 8GB card, I proceed to watch dozens of others come by to grab a shot or 14 shots of "Grizzly Giant". (This is a huge Sequoia which stands 209ft and is 96.5ft around.) I am struck by how we've lost the art of photography. How can I come home with 7 shots of this tree...all subpar. What if I only had one shot? Would I study the subject more? Would I take my time in setup? That image would mean more to me b/c I found MY view of this tree. MY interpretation. While this guy was packing up, I asked..."Do you have a card...Somewhere that I might see your work...?" He said, I don't have a card with me, but if you search the web for...B-O-B--K-O-L-B-R-E-N-E-R, you will find me. After leaving the valley and gaining internet access, I looked up Mr. K-O-L-B-R-E-N-E-R and found that I had run into a special person. Mr. Kolbrener was an assistant and fellow instructor of photography at Yosemite with none other than Mr. Ansel Adams himself. I was blown away. His work is truly astonishing! If only I could go back and grab on to his coattails or leather belt compartments in this case, I would have studied his every move. He continues to shoot and has exhibitions of his work traveling the world which is showcased along with Adams.
It was a great moment for me. Here I am this peon in the world of photography and we have greats like Kolbrener and Adams before us to remind us of the ART of photography. Reminding us to let a little piece of ourselves be in every image. Reminding us to express ourselves. And most of all, reminding us to look for the small things in life. The beautiful shadows, streams, fog, weather, reflections, shapes, textures, faces, etc. God has blessed us so much with these things to enjoy. Slow down and look close.

And.... we're back! Life has been pretty crazy lately, which seems to be my thought's every time I sit down to post. There have been weddings and engagement shoots and life adventures. It get a bit overwhelming to think about documenting it all. Besides for the nonsense, I've been really looking forward to this post. This wedding took place in Saratoga Springs, which is right on the heels of The Adirondacks, which I'm sure I was stolen from as a baby. OK... Sidetracked! Pete and Courtney we're really fun, really cool, and really creative. Pete is a talented photographer himself, so, I maintained a steady flow of sweat beads anytime I was near my camera. They nailed all the details! Right down to the neighbor having a super sweet wood panel station wagon in their front yard as a prop! Ok, that wasn't planned but became my favorite moment of the entire day. Thanks to whoever you are! So Pete & Courtney...We had a blast hanging with you guys and can't thank you enough for the cottage! Have a great day friends!

Who says you can only eat this in Spring! Today we called it Summer Stir-Fry and it was delish. I love when the Mrs.'s comes home with a plan, esp if it's from Kraft and most esp if it is, or is somehow related to ASIAN food!! SO often I think, "If I was on death row...Yeah it would definitely be an ASIAN meal for my final". Don't ask why I think about being on death row or how I'm going to get there. For now I'll just enjoy frequenting my favorite MSG free establishments! MMM...Orange Chicken with white rice and a side of Crab Rangoon please! This amazing need to drive and shoot! Lately I've been thinking that every barn needs to be captured! We are in a desperate search for a new home, a tad further from the brand new ROUNDABOUT, where people seem to lose their minds. Seriously people... It's a circle. Can you really get that lost?
These two dwelling's are from a recent house hunt. The three story barn on the left was quite the attraction for us. We'd really like to buy an old barn and turn it into our home. I have a feeling this one would have given us a few extra wild guests. Things could be worse i'm sure. This lonely guy on the right was the nearest neighbor. Unfortunately, we passed on the home...or fortunately!

Tara & Brennan. SO much can be said abou these two. Brennan is one of the most down to earth, drum smacking, hockey playing, OFFICE loving guys you will ever meet. So what'd you do when it hits 50° outside, sunny, and you call NY home? YOU EMBRACE SPRING! Needless to say, we have. I've now been out tramping for the past 6 days. Today while discussing dinner the option for Rodeo Burgers and Sweet Potato Fries came about. After being shot down for Chinese (I would have this ethnic meal four times a day), GRILLING was next on the list. Here we put a vegetarian spin on a meaty favorite. So to apease the vegetarian...we call on Morningstar Black Bean Burgers as our base. After a brief baste of sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, Cabot cheddar cheese, and caramelized onions, who cares! It's delicious! I can't forget to mention the homemade ranch dipping sauce for the fries. I'm delighted that Springs here and can't wait to get the Char-Broil out again.

I'm super proud of her for many reasons. This time it's because of her knitting skills! Marla does a swell job at knitting just about anything, but I'm keen on her scarf's. Mainly because she made me one and its killer! We had fun on our little shoot a few days ago. Western New York is beginning to see SPRING with our sunny days and temps hitting the 40's. I'm sitting here, staring at this screen, still in my state of jet lag. I'm amazed at how easy it is after these trips to be staring at the ceiling at 3:30am, WIDE AWAKE! Besides, for 7 days we lived 16 hours in the future. The flight's for this trip were as follows...Leave Buffalo, Fly to Chicago, Fly to LA, Fly to Auckland, Fly to Wellington, Fly to Christchurch, Drive to Ashburton, and it was worth every moment of hearing babies cry and elderly people pacing the aisle's of the double decker!

We had just a phenomenal trip to New Zealand and are so blessed to have friends like the Matthew's. Not only are they great host's, but they're darn good tour guides as well. From private plane rides over the Southern Alps to Fashion shows at a local school, who could want more! There will be more posts to follow from the trip, but for now, thanks a ton friends and Ruby! (their newest member who is only slightly more aggressive than the other two.)

As March get's closer, prep for MAN TRIP '10 is beginning. Last years trip was a huge success and brought everyone back home anticipating the next. If you're not familiar with MAN TRIP, it is a body of outlaws (of the Bannister family), linked by our wonderful wives, who are all on the quest for the ultimate outdoor adventure. A majority of us are also well on our way to hiking the 46 Hi-Peaks of the Adirondacks. The '09 trip followed that idea as we planned to camp and hike Big Slide, #27 of the peaks. It was one of the most rad hikes I've ever done as well as an amazing view of the Great Range and Mt. Marcy. This year's adventure...well...Wait and See!

Yesterday I spent some time roaming through a few older shots from the summer. Really trying to psych myself for shooting this spring/summer/fall. I came across this image which just speaks...SUN! (Not to mention my wife is gorgeous! ) So as I rolled over from my nights slothful state, I noticed something coming from under the shade. My mind began to race..."It's Sunny!! I should be outside shooting" or getting vitamin D or other things you may do in the sun. Sunny days are such a welcome thing here in WNY. So with that in mind, I felt this image was very appropriate for today.

Life ~ It Was A Goal...

It was a goal for this year, but I would have never guessed it would have have happened this quick! While working on branding for one of my friends at home on Friday, I received a call that had Jaker (my cat Jake) running with my response. I did wait until I got off the phone to let it out but it was a highlight of my life. The call was from Adirondack Life Magazine. Let's start with the fact that I think the Adirondacks is one of the most amazing places on earth. I would live there, In a heartbeat. I've made many trips there and am on my way to hiking all 46 hi peaks. SO with my love for the ADKS came my love of the Adirondack Life Mag. It's like a..."here's what's happening at your home while you're in Batavia" for me. So when I realized, "Hey, they have a Photo Contest", I was like, "that'd be sweet!". So I entered a few shots. The lovely lady on the other end of the phone was calling to inform me that I was a finalist for the competition and that my image (below) would be published in the April 2010 Issue. Keeping the suspense alive, they don't tell you what place you're in, which I can appreciate. So as I sit anticipating the April issue and marking off "get a photo published in a Mag in 2010", I am overjoyed and honored to have been chosen, regardless of the placement. So, I've decided that throughout the winter, I'm going to randomly give both you and I a break from the winter. Today we warm up by thinking back to a day when I got a little close with one of my models (MY WIFE). This was a fun shoot that ended with a few shots of us just laying in the field. Winter is in FULL EFFECT here in western NY. Try keeping me inside. I'm going through somewhat of a dry spell with my photography but am refusing to let it get the best of me! The wifey and I love to get out an and snowshoe this time of year. I look forward to these times of being in the woods, fields and snow, and spending time with her. I'm using this time to document and capture the beauty of what God's given to us. These are a few shots of the delights I've experienced on the trails the past few days.

A New Year & Waterfall

It's a few days late, but it's the thought that counts! I hope all of you had a great New Year's time as well as a great Christmas. Each year seems to get a little more busy but also a little more amazing. I'm surrounded by great people. I'm really looking forward to this year. I have a feeling it's going to hold many exciting times and have already booked what are going to be some really cool shoots. I'm beginning to explore many of the areas nearby a little more and are finding many amazing places to shoot. One of my recent favorites is another falls found to be part of the "Attica Cascades". This shot is part of the flow coming downstream and is one of the first with my new ND Filter. I'm really looking forward to Spring/Summer to photograph this spot seeing as how most of this falls is ice at the moment. Nevertheless, I'm out looking and shooting and will continue to take you on my journey.

Great Outdoors ~ A Park In Winter

We had a wonderful snow on Thursday and it was all I could do to get my work finished so that I could go outside to play! Kinda felt like i was in Elementary School again. I decided it'd be a great day to pull the snowshoes out and head to the County Park. Winter Wonderland. Amazing. Alone. All thing's that came to mind. As I was heading down the trail a gust of wind picked up and began tossing snow and ice from the treetops. I knew I wanted to capture this so I positioned myself so that I could catch the sun behind some of the snow as it took flight. It took a few different positions to figure how to make this more interesting then i saw this tree which looked like it had a story of its own and positioned myself behind it. It was perfect. After about 15 minutes the gust came and lit up the trail right where I had anticipated.

Life ~ A Trip To The City

I had the pleasure this past weekend to take my very first train ride. We caught the Amtrak in Rochester and Finished in Penn Station... New York City! Let me say that trains are now up there on my list of "everyone should try this". Next I want to take it out west or through the Canadian Rockies. We had a blast in NY eating, looking, and walking, walking, walking. Sometimes I think, I could live there for at least a year. The culture is overflowing. I would have a hard time choosing where to eat if I called this place home. Everywhere you dine us GREAT! From bagel shops, to Australian coffee shops (which have Flat Whites!!), to Mediterranean food and Chestnuts roasting on an open pretzel cart. (Those were a first too.) There are a lot of things I love about NY. Here are a few to share.

Canada... is becoming one of my favorite places to explore. Recently, We took a trip up to the Muskoka Lakes area. You definitely get the feeling you're on the fringes of Algonquin Park, with it's wide open lakes, marshy bogs, and dense forests. Conditions weren't stellar, but I did get the occasional break through of sun (as you can see by the killer double rainbow!). Until next time, go explore!

Good Eats ~ Earls Fruit Jar Drinkers

It was a cold blustery Thursday. We were driving around in the country, on a mission to pick up a craigslist find... a Wardrobe. Wardrobes don't excite me, but, Fried Chicken sure does. The famous Earls lay in wait on our route. You must experience this place. It is a mix between a diner, a bakery, a museum, and a Ripley's Believe It or Not! With tables supported by what looks to be the amputated legs of Earl and some of the best home cookin' I've had since my migration north, how can you go wrong! The food was great and the pie's, delicious. Never did figure out what a "Fruit Jar Drinker" was but ... anyone wanna go? Here are a few fav's from this experience. P.S. The mannequin watches while you enjoy your dinner.

Random ~ Niagara Falls

I call it Random. It's when I just have shots to post that don't necessarily have anything to do with anything except that I want to put them together in a picture collage called a blog post. It starts today. It may pop up Randomly here.

Today's randomness is brought to you by Lasik of Niagara, which is where I spent some time recently with my lovely wife. Rather than sit in the waiting room, watching reruns of Friends(they had the seasons on dvd), and thinking of how they're trying to make me laugh so I don't think about the fact that my wife may never see me again, I scoot down the street to Clifton Hills and Niagara Falls. I was surprised to see how close the two were. Marla is very content with the fact that she can see (minus her contacts and glasses) and that makes me content, and so i post. A great day to you all.

It's Fall ~ The Adams Family

Meet the Adams Family. This crew is just as much a pleasure to photograph as they are to spend time with. This was a shoot that ole mother nature tried to prevent from happening. We'd postponed already once due to snow and temps in the 30's and today wasn't looking very promising. I knew things would be fine when as we pulled in to the location, the sun poked his head through the dark, dismal clouds. It was a nice fall day at Ellison Park and the kids seemed to love being outside, seeing as how they ran down every hill they saw. We had a blast with these guys and topped it off with some serious authentic Mexican at Moe's (WELCOME TO MOE'S!) Here are some of the fav's from the shoot.

Hurd Orchards is a family owned fruit and flower farm and canning company nestled in the fertile lake plains of Western New York between the banks of the Erie Canal and the shores of Lake Ontario. This place is right out of a Martha Stewart Magazine. They center around a love of fruit growing, an endless appreciation for the earth's gifts, of the heritage of our region, and for the beauty which surrounds us them season. Here are some shots from a recent shoot I did at the Orchards.

Heart Lake Pano ~ The Adirondacks

The Adirondacks - one of the places in the world where I just lose myself. There is something charming about its rugged, grand wilderness. It holds some of the most beautiful bodies of water I've ever seen. Marla and I had the chance to add another mountain on our quest of hiking all 46 HiPeaks. Anyone that hikes in the Adirondacks knows about Heart Lake and the ADK Loj. This is the base for quite a few of the Peaks near Lake Placid. If you're lucky you can book a lean-to right on the lake. This was the view from ours! I've been asked about prints of some of the work I have so occasionally I will be posting a print for sale. As is the case with this shot. Prints are now available for Heart Lake Pano and are printed as limited edition prints which are signed and numbered. Color prints are printed on Fuji Standard Professional Paper. The standard size for this print is 10in x 30in. The cost is $65 for the print only. If you are interested in ordering, please contact me.

Two Vine ~ Nine Years

SO yesterday marked our 9th year of marriage and it was an awesome day. I truly am blessed with the most amazing wife. We had a great day together and our dinner was delicious! Here we have a Chickpea Pasta with Mushrooms and Steak Frites (European for French Fries) served with a chili tomato sauce. I think we both gave 2 Vine two thumbs up and are already suggesting it to others.

Simply Amazing New York ~ My Wife

So, It's Sunday afternoon, and I was aching to do shoot. I love New York. Life changes here in the fall and people's souls are stirred to get outside. This has been true for me now for weeks, why not today? Luckily I was blessed with a model for a wife (almost 9 years now!) so we just went for a ride in the city & country. Here what we came up with.

Anthony & Allison ~ Engaged

Early. That's the first word the comes to mind when I think of this shoot! It was awesome though! Our dear friends Anthony & Allison were engaged at sunrise on August 14! When Anthony contacted me he mentioned I would have to hide, which lead to immediately thinking of disguises and war paint. I did feel quite stealthy running from tree to tree with my camera gun ready to shoot. It was awesome being a part of an event with so much excited tension. Knowing it was going to happen without saying or making a peep. Allison's expressions were awesome. If she would've been any happier she would have blown up. We're happy for them. Now stay tuned for the wedding!

Dana & Vince ~ Hitched!

Happy Fall! Almost. You can feel and smell it in the air. This is the wedding of my super cousin that i shot in April. Key West is quite different from NY in many ways, one being that it was, say, 90s in April. It was a nice break for Marla and I. Anyways, Dana & Vince were great and we had a blast with them and their families (also my family?). Their wedding was at the Casa Marina, which I think you could drop the camera and get a spectacular shot of. We wish a long happy marriage for you two!
